In a grand celebration marking its 99th anniversary, Volvo Cars has taken a monumental leap into its electric future with the global debut and pre-sale launch of two flagship electric vehicles: the all-new EX90 and ES90. The unveiling, held on April 15th, signals a bold new chapter for the Swedish automaker, reinforcing its commitment to safety, sustainability, and Scandinavian design while fully embracing electrification. The EX90, a premium electric SUV, starts at a pre-sale price of 539,900 RMB, while the ES90, a sleek and technologically advanced electric sedan, enters the market at a compelling 429,900 RMB. Both vehicles are built upon Volvo's next-generation SPA2 pure-electric architecture, promising a blend of unparalleled safety, performance, and luxury.

The pricing strategy clearly positions these models for the competitive premium EV segment in China. The Volvo EX90 is offered in two trims: the Dual-Motor AWD Plus at 539,900 RMB and the high-performance Dual-Motor AWD Ultra at 609,900 RMB. The ES90 sedan follows a similar pattern with two variants: the Rear-Wheel Drive Long Range Plus at 429,900 RMB and the Dual-Motor AWD Ultra at 499,900 RMB. To sweeten the deal for early adopters, Volvo has announced a comprehensive suite of launch benefits, including loyalty upgrade offers, extended warranty and service packages, charging solutions, and various安心礼 (peace-of-mind) perks, showcasing the brand's focus on a holistic ownership experience.

Design-wise, the EX90 carries forward the evolutionary yet striking design language first seen on its overseas counterpart. The front fascia is dominated by a sleek, closed-off grille and the iconic "Thor's Hammer" LED headlights, now rendered with even greater precision and sharpness. Flanking the central section are vertically oriented LED daytime running lights, while an active grille shutter system enhances aerodynamic efficiency. The side profile is clean and elegant, inspired by the flowing lines of a yacht, featuring flush door handles that contribute to an impressive drag coefficient of just 0.29 Cd. A two-tone paint option adds a touch of personalization. With dimensions of 5037mm in length, 1964mm in width, 1742mm in height, and a 2985mm wheelbase, the EX90 commands a substantial and confident road presence. At the rear, distinctive, wraparound LED taillights and additional vertical light strips on the D-pillars ensure high visibility and a unique nighttime signature.

Stepping inside the EX90, one is greeted by Volvo's signature Scandinavian minimalist ethos. The cabin is a sanctuary of calm, centered around a massive 14.5-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen that floats atop the dashboard. Sustainable and recycled materials are used extensively throughout the interior, aligning with the brand's environmental goals. Underpinning this luxury is Volvo's legendary focus on safety, expected to be elevated by next-generation sensor suites and software.

Powertrain options for the EX90 include two dual-motor all-wheel-drive configurations. The lower-powered setup combines a 173 kW front motor with a 127 kW rear motor, while the high-performance variant boosts output to 180 kW at the front and a substantial 200 kW at the rear. Energy is stored in a high-capacity ternary lithium-ion battery pack, promising robust range and performance.

The star of the show for many tech enthusiasts, however, is the all-new ES90 sedan. It represents a watershed moment for Volvo as the first model in its lineup to adopt an 800V high-voltage platform. This architectural leap translates into the fastest charging and longest range in the brand's history. The ES90's advanced battery management system enables a blistering charge from 10% to 80% state-of-charge in approximately 20 minutes, courtesy of a maximum charging power of 350 kW. On a full charge, it can travel over 700 kilometers, effectively alleviating range anxiety for long-distance travelers.

Visually, the ES90 adopts a sleek, fastback-inspired silhouette that exudes dynamism and elegance. Its face features a clean, closed grille and matrix LED technology within the "Thor's Hammer" headlights. A key highlight is the optional LiDAR system housed discreetly on the roof. The LiDAR-equipped ES90 boasts a formidable sensor array: one LiDAR, five millimeter-wave radars, seven surround-view cameras, and twelve ultrasonic sensors. This data is processed by a powerful dual Nvidia Drive AGX Orin chipset, delivering a staggering 508 TOPS of computing power to enable advanced driver-assistance systems and pave the way for future autonomous driving capabilities.

With a length of 5000mm, width of 1942mm, height of 1547mm, and a generous wheelbase of 3102mm, the ES90 offers a spacious and luxurious interior. The side profile is accentuated by a sharp character line, flush door handles, and stylish large-diameter alloy wheels. The rear end continues the minimalist theme with elegant C-shaped LED taillights featuring intricate internal patterning and a subtle integrated spoiler that adds a sporty flourish.

Inside, the ES90 mirrors the EX90's futuristic and serene cabin layout, centered on the same 14.5-inch vertical touchscreen, creating a cohesive and high-tech digital environment for all occupants. Powertrain choices are versatile, ranging from an efficient single-motor rear-wheel-drive configuration to a potent dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup, catering to different performance and efficiency preferences.

The launch of the EX90 and ES90 is more than just the introduction of two new cars; it is a definitive statement of intent from Volvo. By combining its non-negotiable safety heritage with cutting-edge electric vehicle technology, sustainable luxury, and a forward-thinking design philosophy, Volvo is not just transitioning to an electric future—it is aiming to define it. These models are poised to challenge established players in the premium EV space, offering a compelling alternative that prioritizes human-centric design, technological innovation, and environmental responsibility. The pre-sale phase has officially begun, marking the countdown to a new era for the 99-year-old Swedish marque.
