In a move set to intensify competition within China's premium electric vehicle segment, Xpeng Motors has officially unveiled its latest technological flagship, the GX SUV. The grand reveal took place at the dedicated Xpeng GX Technology Launch Event on April 15th, where the company simultaneously opened pre-orders for the highly anticipated model. Positioned as a brand-new mid-to-large-size SUV, the GX marks a significant step up for Xpeng, with a starting pre-sale price of 399,800 RMB. The vehicle will be offered in both Extended-Range Electric Vehicle (EREV) and pure Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) variants, catering to diverse consumer needs for range flexibility and zero-emission driving. According to official announcements, display models are scheduled to arrive at showrooms across China starting April 18th, allowing customers to experience the vehicle firsthand.

The naming of the "GX" is deeply symbolic, as explained by Xpeng's Chairman and CEO, He Xiaopeng. "'X' represents the exploration (eXploration) of the beautiful unknown in mobility," he stated, emphasizing the brand's forward-looking vision. "More importantly, it signifies the technological genes (X-tech) embedded in Xpeng's DNA—our commitment to solving fundamental problems thoroughly through technology." This declaration underscores the GX's role not just as a new product but as a manifestation of Xpeng's core philosophy: leveraging advanced engineering to redefine the user experience.

Externally, the Xpeng GX adopts the brand's latest evolutionary design language, presenting a facade that masterfully blends minimalist aesthetics with a commanding road presence. The front end is dominated by the signature full-width light bar, now a hallmark of Xpeng's identity, which seamlessly integrates into a highly aggressive front bumper assembly. Pronounced air curtains and dynamic air intakes flank the lower section, hinting at the vehicle's aerodynamic efficiency and performance potential. The side profile continues the theme of sophisticated simplicity, featuring clean, flowing character lines and a contemporary floating roof design that visually lowers the vehicle's center of gravity. Complementing this are aerodynamically optimized multi-spoke alloy wheels and flush-mounted door handles, which contribute to a sleek, uncluttered silhouette. At the rear, the design philosophy harmonizes with the front, featuring a distinctive full-width taillight cluster that ensures high visibility and brand recognition. In terms of dimensions, the GX establishes itself as a substantial offering, measuring 5265mm in length, 1999mm in width, and 1800mm in height, with a generous wheelbase of 3115mm, promising expansive interior space.

Stepping inside the GX is where Xpeng's "Cosmic Quantum" design philosophy truly comes to life, aiming to replicate the luxurious and serene ambiance of a first-class airline cabin. The centerpiece of the driver-focused cockpit is the innovative "Cosmic Pilot" steer-by-wire steering wheel. Both the steering wheel and the front seats feature an intelligent welcome function, with the wheel capable of an impressive 135mm of automatic electric retraction for easier ingress and egress, while its control buttons are arranged in an intuitive "planetary" configuration. Dominating the dashboard is a massive 17.3-inch 3K ultra-narrow-bezel central touchscreen, serving as the primary interface for the vehicle's infotainment and control systems.

The attention to detail and luxury extends throughout the cabin. The front center console utilizes a "Pilot Suspension Island" design, which elegantly combines decorative elements with functional layout. It houses a smart rising wireless charging panel and hidden, pop-up cup holders, maximizing usable storage space without compromising on style. The door panels, inspired by a "Starry Sky Horizon," are crafted from premium star-velvet perforated leather and are accentuated by a delicate "Starlight Ribbon" ambient lighting strip, significantly elevating the tactile and visual quality of the interior. For audiophiles, the GX is equipped with the top-tier "Listening Realm AI Sound System Max," boasting an immersive array of 33 speakers strategically placed throughout the cabin. A major highlight for rear-seat passengers is the inclusion of independent zero-gravity seats. Upholstered in perforated genuine leather and featuring comprehensive adjustment controls including leg rests, these seats promise unparalleled comfort on long journeys, transforming the second row into a personal relaxation zone.

Underpinning the GX's luxury is a choice of sophisticated powertrains designed for performance and peace of mind. The Extended-Range variant is powered by a 1.5-liter range-extender engine generating 110 kW, paired with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup. The front and rear electric motors produce 160 kW and 210 kW respectively, enabling a top speed of 200 km/h. Crucially, it offers a pure-electric driving range of 320 km on a single charge, sufficient for daily commutes, while the gasoline engine acts as a generator to eliminate range anxiety on longer trips. For those committed to fully electric propulsion, the BEV version also employs a dual-motor AWD configuration, with the front and rear motors delivering 160 kW and a more potent 270 kW. It matches the 200 km/h top speed and will be available with several battery options, providing impressive CLTC-rated ranges of 635 km, 665 km, 720 km, and up to 750 km for the long-range model, addressing the needs of even the most demanding drivers.

The launch of the Xpeng GX at this price point signals the company's confident entry into a more premium market bracket, directly challenging established players. By offering both EREV and BEV options, Xpeng strategically covers a wider spectrum of buyer preferences, from tech-savvy early adopters who desire pure electric driving to those who prioritize the flexibility of a hybrid system. With its bold design, a cabin dripping with technology and luxury, strong performance figures, and competitive range, the GX is poised to become a formidable contender. As display cars prepare to hit showrooms, the automotive industry and consumers alike will be watching closely to see if this "X-ploration" into the higher-end market will solidify Xpeng's reputation as a leader in intelligent electric vehicle innovation.
