Mercedes-Benz has officially unveiled the 2027 EQS electric flagship sedan, representing the most significant technical overhaul since the model's debut in 2021. The vehicle upgrades its electrical architecture from 400 volts to 800 volts, increases battery capacity to 122 kWh, and introduces a newly developed in house electric motor paired with a two speed rearaxle transmission. More than 25 percent of the vehicle‘s components have been redesigned, upgraded or refined.

800V Architecture: 10 Minutes, 320 km of Range

The core upgrade of the 2027 EQS lies in its electrical architecture. The new 800volt system enables DC fast charging at up to 350 kW. When connected to an 800V charger, the EQS can add approximately 320 km of WLTP range in just 10 minutes. Regenerative braking power has also been increased from 290 kW to 385 kW, a one third improvement.

Battery Technology: 122 kWh with New Chemistry

The 2027 EQS is equipped with a 122 kWh high voltage battery pack, up from 118 kWh. The cells feature a new silicon oxide and graphite anode chemistry, delivering higher energy density while reducing cobalt content. The single motor rear wheel drive EQS 450+ achieves a WLTP combined range of 925 km, making it the longest range Mercedes Benz EV to date.

Powertrain: In House Motor + Two Speed Rear Transmission

The 2027 EQS features MercedesBenz‘s selfdeveloped electric drive units, with a twospeed transmission now fitted on the rear axle. The transmission provides an 11:1 torque multiplication for launch, switching to a more economical 5:1 ratio at speeds up to approximately 112 km/h. Three variants are offered: EQS 450+, EQS 500 4MATIC, and EQS 580 4MATIC.

Exterior: Revised Front Face with Enhanced Star Elements

The 2027 EQS retains its distinctive “one bow” silhouette with a class leading drag coefficient of 0.20Cd. The front fascia features a new design with a powerdome hood and optimised lighting. The standard model features a black grille with a backlit star pattern and wide chrome slats, while the optional AMG Line offers a unique backlit star grille with an illuminated central Mercedes star.

Interior and Technology: Steer by Wire Debuts, MB.OS Upgrade

The MBUX Hyperscreen remains standard. The 2027 EQS is the first production Mercedes Benz to offer steer by wire, available with a yoke style steering wheel featuring a maximum steering angle of approximately 270 degrees. The new MB.OS operating system integrates a multi agent AI assistant with deep Google Maps integration. The vehicle is equipped with 10 cameras and 27 sensors, supporting automated lane changes, evasive steering and automated parking.

Market Information: US Deliveries in Second Half of 2026

The 2027 EQS was announced globally on April 14, 2026, with US deliveries expected to begin in the second half of 2026. Pricing is expected to increase across the range.

Outlook: Paving the Way for an S Class EV

Mercedes-Benz has indicated that it will leverage the technology validated on the EQS to introduce an S Class pureelectric model with a more classic design language, extending its high end electric vehicle portfolio. The 2027 EQS serves not only as a mid cycle update but also as a critical validation of Mercedes Benz‘s luxury EV technology roadmap.
