At the 2026 Beijing Auto Show, BYD will globally debut the Sealion 08, a new flagship SUV for its Ocean series. With a length exceeding 5 meters and a wheelbase of over 3 meters, the Sealion 08 directly targets the large six- or seven-seat premium family SUV segment. For Hong Kong users, the most significant highlight is the standard rear-wheel steering system, which dramatically reduces the turning circle of this 5-meter "giant." This feature alone could transform the ownership experience for local drivers who have long struggled with tight streets and cramped parking spaces.

The Sealion 08 will be available in both pure electric (BEV) and fifth-generation DM-i plug-in hybrid versions. The BEV variant is built on the e-platform 3.0 Evo architecture, featuring BYD's second-generation Blade Battery and megawatt flash charging technology. It boasts a CLTC range of up to 1,000 kilometers and can replenish approximately 400 kilometers of range in just 5 minutes under a flash charger. In normal temperatures, the battery can charge from 10% to 70% in 5 minutes and to 97% in 9 minutes. The DM-i version has a fuel consumption of just 3.5L/100km when depleted, a combined range exceeding 1,430km, and an electric range of over 200km. The Sealion 08 also comes standard with Yunlian-A dual-chamber air suspension, road preview technology, and a high-level intelligent driving system.

Looking at the Hong Kong market, BYD's success has been remarkable. In 2025, BYD became the top-selling brand in Hong Kong for the first time, with 9,751 registrations, ending the long-standing monopoly of foreign brands. The Sealion 07 EV alone sold 5,680 units, becoming the best-selling model of the year. However, the "One-for-One" EV tax concession scheme ended on March 31, 2026, meaning new EVs are now subject to full progressive First Registration Tax. The tax rate for the portion of a car's price exceeding HKD 500,000 is as high as 132%. With the Sealion 08's expected price in the RMB 300,000-400,000 range (approximately HKD 320,000-430,000), the final on-road price will be substantial.

Despite this, the Sealion 08's product strength is undeniable. Its 1,000km range, flash charging, rear-wheel steering, and Yunlian-A chassis offer a compelling value proposition compared to rivals like the Toyota Highlander and BMW X3. BYD has also established over 10 direct stores in Hong Kong's core areas, providing a solid sales and service network. If the Sealion 08 is introduced in a right-hand drive version, it could become a new benchmark in Hong Kong's large SUV market.

This vehicle proves that a 5-meter SUV can be both spacious and agile. The rear-wheel steering system addresses the core concern of Hong Kong drivers: maneuverability. With the Sealion 07 EV's success as a foundation, the Sealion 08 aims to elevate BYD's brand perception from a mainstream choice to a flagship option. For Hong Kong families seeking a large, efficient, and intelligent SUV, the Sealion 08 is a model worth watching.
