On April 8, Leapmotor unveiled the Lafa5 Ultra, the top-tier variant of its Lafa5 lineup. Featuring exclusive sporty body kits and upgraded interior details, the new model will launch in April. For Hong Kong users, the Lafa5 Ultra raises a key question: with LiDAR, dual flagship Qualcomm chips, a 180kW motor, and a sub-HKD 150,000 estimated price, could this become the affordable performance EV that young Hong Kong drivers have been waiting for?

Design and Performance

The Lafa5 Ultra features a wide, low-slung stance with sporty body kits, including a front splitter, side skirts, rear diffuser, and rear wing, all designed to optimize aerodynamics. It rides on 19-inch wheels with matte dark grey calipers and blacked-out badging. The vehicle measures 4,490mm in length, 1,880mm in width, and 1,510mm in height, with a 2,735mm wheelbase. Power comes from a 180kW high-power electric drive, upgraded from the standard Lafa5's 160kW, with a China-Europe co-tuned chassis balancing sporty handling and daily comfort. Range options are 515km and 605km (CLTC), with 18-minute fast charging from 30% to 80%.

Smart Features

The Lafa5 Ultra is equipped with dual flagship Qualcomm chips (8295P+8650) and LiDAR, enabling nationwide urban NAP without reliance on high-definition maps. This hardware provides future-proofing for ADAS features as regulations potentially evolve.

Hong Kong Perspective

Leapmotor has a presence in Hong Kong, with the standard Lafa5 launched in November 2025 at a limited-time price of RMB 92,800-116,800 (approx. HKD 100,000-126,000). A Leapmotor manager stated that the brand competes with other domestic Chinese brands in Hong Kong, targeting the entry-level EV segment. Key competitors include the BYD Dolphin, Volkswagen ID.3, and SAIC MG4. With a width of 1,880mm, the Lafa5 Ultra is 110mm wider than the BYD Dolphin, contributing to a sportier stance and handling.

Personal Opinion

The Lafa5 Ultra represents the arrival of affordable performance in the EV era. Features like LiDAR, dual flagship chips, and a 605km range at an entry-level price point demonstrate Leapmotor's commitment to accessible technology. For Hong Kong drivers, it offers a compelling blend of low running costs, driving enjoyment, and smart features. The April launch is a date worth watching. When domestic brands redefine value, Hong Kong buyers stand to benefit. The Lafa5 Ultra could become a common sight on Hong Kong's streets, proving that performance and affordability can coexist.
