On April 7, Xpeng's platform product marketing director announced the official launch of the all-new Xpeng X9 in Hong Kong, with an early-bird price starting at HKD 799,900. This flagship all-electric luxury seven-seat MPV comes standard with an 800V platform, 5C ultra-fast charging AI battery, Turing chip, active rear-wheel steering, and intelligent dual-chamber air suspension, delivering a maximum CLTC range of 750km. For Hong Kong users, the Xpeng X9 raises a key question: with its competitive pricing, advanced technology, and superior specs, can it challenge the dominance of traditional Japanese MPVs like the Toyota Alphard and Lexus LM?

Pricing Strategy: A Precision Move at HKD 799,900

The early-bird price of HKD 799,900 positions the Xpeng X9 between the Toyota Alphard (approx. HKD 800,000) and Lexus LM (approx. HKD 1,000,000). While higher than the mainland price (RMB 309,800-369,800), it accounts for RHD development, taxes, and shipping. For Hong Kong buyers, the Xpeng X9 offers comparable purchase cost but significantly lower running costs (approx. HKD 0.3/km vs. HKD 1.5-2/km for petrol MPVs). More importantly, it surpasses traditional MPVs in technology, range, and charging efficiency.

Key Technologies: 800V, 5C Ultra-Fast Charging, and Rear-Wheel Steering

The Xpeng X9 features an 800V platform and 5C ultra-fast charging, delivering a 750km CLTC range. A 15-minute charge adds approximately 500km of range, eliminating range anxiety. Active rear-wheel steering reduces the turning radius to just 5.4 meters, making this large MPV surprisingly maneuverable on Hong Kong's narrow streets. The intelligent dual-chamber air suspension and six hydraulic bushings enhance ride comfort.

Intelligent Driving: Turing Chip and Second-Generation VLA System

The Xpeng X9 comes standard with a Turing chip offering up to 2250 Tops of computing power, paired with the second-generation VLA (Vision-Language-Action) "private driver" system, which significantly improves ADAS capabilities. While local regulations restrict full functionality, the hardware pre-installation offers future-proofing. The system is highly effective for long-distance driving when traveling north.

Space and Comfort: Flexible Seating and Zero-Gravity Seats

The Xpeng X9 features three-row electric folding seats, offering four-, five-, six-, or seven-seat configurations. Standard Nappa leather seats include zero-gravity seats (with airbags and 180-degree recline), nine airbags, and a blowout stability system. The interior includes a 17.3-inch central display and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster.

Hong Kong Perspective: A Technological Disruption

The Hong Kong MPV market saw a historic shift in 2025, with the Zeekr 009 surpassing the Toyota Alphard in sales. The Xpeng X9 adds further competition, offering unique features like rear-wheel steering, 5C charging, and advanced ADAS. Xpeng's expanding sales and service network in Hong Kong supports local buyers. The 800V platform and 5C charging require a robust fast-charging network, which is growing in mainland China. The early-bird price of HKD 799,900 offers strong value for tech-savvy buyers seeking lower running costs.

Personal Opinion

The Xpeng X9 represents a technological disruption in the luxury MPV segment. Its combination of rear-wheel steering, 5C charging, AI driving, and 750km range gives it a clear advantage over traditional rivals. For Hong Kong buyers, it offers a compelling blend of technology, comfort, and practicality. The Xpeng X9's launch is a key moment for the local MPV market.

As Chinese electric MPVs continue to challenge Japanese dominance, Hong Kong consumers will benefit from more choices and better value. The Xpeng X9's early-bird pricing is a strategic move to capture market share. Its advanced features address key pain points for Hong Kong drivers, such as tight parking and long-distance travel. With its strong product offering, the Xpeng X9 is poised to become a popular choice among Hong Kong families and business users.
