July 18, Changan Automobile Chairman Zhu Furong met with Thai Prime Minister Anutin. This year marks the 51st anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Thailand. The 2026 China-Thailand (Sichuan) Economic and Trade Investment Forum was held in Chengdu, and Changan was the invited Chinese automotive company in Thailand. Yes, the Thai market where Japanese cars have operated for 60 years. Changan Automobile's Rayong Factory just turned one year old. The 20,000th vehicle has come off the line, and shipments have been sent to 18 surrounding countries.
The Rayong Factory this year
Time goes back to November 8, 2023, the groundbreaking ceremony at the Rayong Province site. At that time, many people were watching, thinking it was the familiar export-for-market approach. Unexpectedly, the factory started production after more than a year. On May 16, 2025, the first Deepal S05 Right-Hand Drive version came off the line. This is one of Changan's overseas new energy vehicle bases, and also a similar factory where a central enterprise started production overseas. Five major workshops are complete, with a 90% automation rate at key quality control points. Phase 1 annual capacity is 100,000 vehicles, Phase 2 can reach 200,000 vehicles. On June 9, the 20,000th complete vehicle came off the line at Rayong Factory. The Qiyuan Q05 (called NEVO Q05 overseas) secured 3,000 orders within 3 days of its launch. This pace was faster than expected.
Opening the books, it is full of "local" traces
The page Zhu Furong handed to Anutin requires close inspection. Cumulative vehicle sales exceeded 41,000 units, tax revenue surpassed 1.6 billion Thai Baht, employing over 1,900 local Thais, with talent localization rate approaching 90%. This is not just a car sales report card, but proof embedded in the local economy. Also the supply chain: more than 40 Thai local parts companies entered the supply circle, 10 core suppliers were taken to Thailand to build factories.
Rayong is not just Thailand's factory
Rayong Factory's goods are never only for Thailand. Deepal S05 and Qiyuan Q05 are shipped out immediately upon production, going to Indonesia, Singapore, Australia and other 18 right-hand drive countries. This factory is actually Changan's fulcrum to leverage the global right-hand drive market. The logistics network is also dense. Changan Minsheng Logistics set up a point in Rayong; spare parts can respond within 48 hours; utilizing the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor, "Rail + Sea + Road" combined transport, time to transport domestic KD parts to Thailand was reduced from 28 days to half a month, logistics costs dropped by 20%. This combination of moves solidified Rayong into a Southeast Asian manufacturing hub.
What did both sides say?
Anutin called Changan an important partner in promoting the development of Thailand's new energy vehicle industry, and stated he would help Changan break into the top four global brands in the Thai market by 2030. This recognition stems from aligned steps between both sides.
Thailand wants to change tracks, needing to guard against Japanese cars' decades-long foundation while wanting to grab a spot in the wave of electrification. Changan's pace fits perfectly with the rhythm of Thailand's "30@30" strategy: zero-emission vehicle production to account for 30% by 2030. Zhu Furong said to deepen the "Development in Thailand for Thailand" concept, annual sales in Thailand by 2030 reach 70,000 units, 2028 to demonstrate Rayong Phase II expansion, establish regional R&D center, 2028 localization rate exceed 60%, 2030 local employees reach 3,000 people.
The second half of going global
Thinking carefully, the logic of Chinese automotive companies going global has changed. Just shipping cars to sell, the road gets narrower and narrower. The EU has tariff walls, Southeast Asia has localization red lines. What will be compared in the future? Who can root deeper locally. Changan's 3 years of hard work in Thailand provided a sample from going out to taking root.
