Slow Work Builds Good Cars: The Global Car Logic of Fengyun T7

On August 26, 2026, by Yanqi Lake in Beijing, Chery Fengyun T7 was officially launched. The full series features three models, 600 km range, official guide price 97,900 to 118,900 RMB. Judging by the price alone, it is not stunning; what truly deserves attention is the theme of the launch event — "Steady Happiness".

These four words seem a bit out of place in the current Chinese automotive market. In the first half of 2026, about 630 new models were launched domestically, an average of 3.5 per day, three times the number of new phone models in the same period. Some car manufacturers compressed the original 4 to 5-year car manufacturing cycle to 18 to 20 months. Data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology shows that autonomous brand car recalls totaled about 308,000 units in the same period, a year-on-year surge of 681.2%. Speed and quality are becoming increasingly difficult to balance in this industry.

When peers compete on who can release new cars faster, Chery chose a reverse path. Fengyun T7 is not simply a revised domestic model exported; it was developed for the global market from the source — pre-adapted to global regulations, returning to the domestic market after verification on global extreme road conditions. This path of "going global first, then returning home" is destined not to be fast. There is logic to being fast, but some things cannot be rushed, such as real-world road testing of global cars, and fine-tuning for different markets.

Why "Slow" is Actually Harder

Speed is a capability, but slowness sometimes requires more stability.

The Fengyun T7 project went through 2 years of planning and 3 years of forward engineering. Relying on Chery's "1+7+N" global R&D system — with the China R&D headquarters as the core, linking global R&D centers such as Frankfurt, Germany; Barcelona, Spain; and Yokohama, Japan. The three-year cycle seems "luxurious" in today's industry pace, but Chery spent the extra time on market pre-planning. More than 5,000 global users deeply participated in research, covering driving scenarios in 15 typical countries. Considering the needs of different markets at the vehicle definition stage is much harder and requires more time than patching up during later revisions.

The industry standard practice focuses on virtual simulation, with a few prototype short-distance validations to compress the cycle. Fengyun T7 invested 81 exclusive durability test vehicles for simultaneous road testing, cumulative mileage exceeding 6 million km, specialized durability field testing 1.45 million km, all from real roads. No matter how advanced virtual simulation is, it cannot replace the feedback of real vehicles on real road surfaces — Nordic ice and snow, Middle Eastern dust storms, Southeast Asian torrential rains; these scenarios cannot be simulated in a lab. This is a labor-intensive effort, but precisely the most responsible way for users.

Running Faster Than Regulations

Fengyun T7 adopted an "excessive" strategy in standard setting. Directly benchmarking against the 2026 Version E-NCAP Five-Star Safety Standard. The 2026 New Regulations begin systematically evaluating EV-specific safety such as high-voltage power cut-off and battery thermal runaway warning; Fengyun T7 started pre-research two years in advance. High-strength steel proportion 80%, hot-formed steel proportion 18.84%, 9 airbags the most in the class, double-frame subframe plus Pack anti-collision beam class premiere. This set of standards is higher than current European market regulatory requirements; some configurations and designs are even "not utilized" in the current domestic market.

But it is precisely this "overkill" redundancy that supports a car's footing in the overseas market. Europe is one of the markets with the strictest automotive regulations. Raising standards ahead of time to future threshold lines means this car will not be passively eliminated due to regulation upgrades. This is a prediction and also a persistence in long-termism.

Global Design Cannot Be Done in Isolation

Fengyun T7's design was completed collaboratively by 10 global design centers and over 100 designers, with over 5,000 users deeply co-creating. The same-origin model Lepas L6 debuted at the Milan Design Week; European media evaluated it as "blending European minimalism with exquisite Eastern aesthetics". This is not a design department working in isolation, but allowing global aesthetic consensus to participate.

A noteworthy detail is the Blaze Orange paint color. It adopts luxury car-grade tri-coat technology, co-developed with global paint giant Axalta. Nanometer-level pigment paste combined with unique orange pearlescence presents color changes under different light conditions. This attention to the paint surface is not common in 100,000 RMB-level models. It is not a selling point on the spec sheet, but it just happens to reflect a car-making attitude — maintaining the same standards in visible and invisible places.

Validation is Not Just a Process, It Solves Problems

Fengyun T7 ran through more than 100 extreme road conditions globally. Nordic extreme cold -40°C, dual-source heat pump heating efficiency doubled, alleviating winter range anxiety for northern users; Middle East 55°C high-temperature sun exposure, playback device overheating protection optimized, in-car electronic equipment does not strike; Southeast Asian rainy season 500mm water wading, battery pack IP68 water resistance reaches 96 times the national standard. Each test corresponding to these scenarios is backed by specific engineering problems.

More noteworthy is the adaptation of over 80 local habits. Thai right-hand drive users prefer heavier steering feel, calibration increased by 1 level; Europeans are used to front-in parking, 70cm automatic front camera display; Southeast Asian rainy areas, wiper durability separately reinforced. Every adjustment is not a guess in the lab, but real feedback from real vehicle testing. At the press conference, overseas chassis, styling, and R&D engineers appeared together, speaking about real problems and solutions encountered during road tests in their respective countries. The impact of this third-party engineer testimony is far greater than marketing slogans.

Conclusion:

Chery has ranked first in China brand passenger car exports for 23 consecutive years, with global cumulative users exceeding 20.16 million. The same-origin model Lepas L6 has landed in South Africa and Thailand, and is about to enter markets such as the EU, Australia/New Zealand, UK, Israel, Malaysia, etc. The Associated Press did a special report. Pre-sale orders exceeded 16,787 units in 9 days, delivery began simultaneously upon launch, the first batch of owners includes multiple foreign nationals in China. Market recognition is the most effective validation of "slow".

Chery Automobile Executive Vice President Zhang Guozhong said at the press conference: "A truly beautiful global car must not be a fast-moving consumer good, but a durable good, a work of art." When the industry is obsessed with exchanging speed for traffic and parameters for orders, Fengyun T7 chose a more laborious path. Using three years to complete road tests skipped by others, using 6 million km to verify links skipped by others. It is not the most aggressive in parameters, but may be the most thoroughly validated in the 100,000 RMB-level range. China's automotive exports have moved from "selling products" to "building standards" stage. Some links, cannot be fast at all.
