Overtaking

2026-08-20 22:00:04

Overtaking (Overtaking / Passing) refers to the dynamic driving behavior of the ego-vehicle overtaking a front vehicle moving in the same direction from behind. It is one of the most frequent and highly dynamic risk operations in daily driving. Overtaking not only tests the vehicle's power burst and instantaneous acceleration performance but also greatly challenges the driver's dynamic visual prediction, spatial distance calculation, and decisive decision-making ability.

Core Attributes and Safety Philosophy

From "blind impulsive lane borrowing" to "clear vision, matched power, clean and quick" tactical conversion: The essence of overtaking is a "tactical maneuver of actively entering an oncoming or adjacent high-risk lane, then safely returning". Successful overtaking is never draggy; its core principles are: Do not overtake if the front view is not clear; do not overtake if power is insufficient; do not overtake if you cannot merge back quickly.

"Time Window" and "Relative Speed Difference" limit game: The level of overtaking danger depends on the relative speed between the two vehicles. The faster the relative speed, the shorter the time and distance required to complete the overtake, and the narrower the time window exposed to risk.

Overtaking Challenges and Regional Differences in Major Global Car Markets

In different road traffic environments globally, the environment and rules of overtaking have significant regional characteristics:

Malaysia/SE Asia Market: Single-lane lane borrowing on Federal Roads and risk of sudden oncoming vehicles

Core Environment: Many non-highway national roads in Malaysia (such as Federal Roads connecting states) are two-way single-lane. Daily travel often requires crossing the centre dashed line to borrow the oncoming lane to overtake heavy trucks (Lorry) or slow-moving vehicles ahead.

Overtaking Focus: Since some Federal Roads have many bends and large undulations, there are many blind spots. Do not blindly follow the vehicle in front to "blindly overtake". You must increase the following distance, misalign the front of the car slightly to the left, completely check if there are any oncoming vehicles ahead, and then downshift to burst power for a one-time decisive overtake.

China Market: Multi-lane overtaking on highways and "Right-side overtaking prevention"

Core Environment: Chinese highways are mostly two-way four-lane or six-lane or more. Traffic regulations clearly prohibit overtaking from the right lane. However, during morning/evening peaks or when traffic flow is heavy, some drivers like to "squeeze through cracks" in the flow, frequently cutting left and right.

Overtaking Focus: Strictly observe the traffic rule of "overtaking from the left". Before overtaking, you must turn on the turn signal early, observe the rearview mirror and blind spots. After completing overtaking, maintain a safe distance before smoothly merging back to the original lane. "S-shaped continuous forced merging" is strictly prohibited.

UK and Europe Market: Strict "Left-hand Traffic / Right-side Overtaking" Iron Law and Highway Etiquette

Core Environment: European highways are orderly. Vehicles drive in their own lanes normally (normal driving lane), using the overtaking lane only for overtaking.

Overtaking Focus: After completing overtaking, you must immediately return to the normal driving lane. It is absolutely not allowed to occupy the overtaking lane for a long time (i.e., the common term "blocking oncoming vehicles by occupying the overtaking lane").

Golden Rules and Four-Step Process for Standard Overtaking Operations

When performing standardized overtaking (especially lane borrowing on two-way roads), the following four steps must be strictly executed:

Step 1: Observe and Evaluate (Can I overtake?)

Core Check:

Front Sight: The centre line must be dashed (if solid, overtaking is absolutely prohibited). The front view must be open, no oncoming vehicles, no junctions, no pedestrians within the line of sight.

Front Vehicle Intent: The front vehicle is not signalling left (indicating the front vehicle has no intention to overtake or turn left), and there are no other obstacles ahead of the front vehicle causing sudden deceleration.

Rear Sight: Confirm through the interior rearview mirror and the right exterior rearview mirror that no other vehicle is overtaking you from behind.

Step 2: Increase Distance and Predictive Vision (See clearly before moving)

Core Operation:

Before overtaking, properly actively increase the following distance from the front vehicle (from close following to pulling back 20-30 metres).

This allows for a better front sight angle, allowing you to observe the road conditions in the oncoming lane through the front vehicle's window or by slightly leaning to the left.

Step 3: Signal, Downshift, Burst Power (Clean and quick)

Core Operation:

Signal: Decisively turn on the left turn signal to clearly convey the overtaking intent to rear and oncoming vehicles.

Downshift and Speed Up: If it is a manual or manual-sequential model, actively downshift one gear (pull RPM to the maximum torque interval); if it is an automatic model, quickly depress the accelerator to trigger downshift.

Accelerate and Cut In: Steer quickly to the left, enter the adjacent lane or oncoming lane, and maintain a lateral safety clearance of about 1 metre or more with the overtaken vehicle.

Step 4: Increase Safe Distance, Signal and Return

Core Operation:

After completing overtaking, drive forward until you can see the full image of the overtaken vehicle (including both headlights) in the right exterior rearview mirror, then turn on the right turn signal.

Steer back to the original lane smoothly. Do not "steer sharply and cut off" (commonly known as "Slicing/Tail-clipping") immediately after overtaking is completed to prevent brushing against the front bumper of the overtaken vehicle.

High-Risk Minefields and Emergency Resolution During Overtaking

Suddenly encounter oncoming vehicle during overtaking (encountering "overtaking failure"):

If while overtaking halfway, you suddenly find a vehicle speeding towards you from the opposite direction, under no circumstances should you panic-brake and stop in the oncoming lane, nor should you forcibly squeeze back to the original lane (if space is insufficient).

The correct action is: Immediately accelerate and surge forward, using the engine's burst power to squeeze back to the original lane before the other party arrives; or if space allows, use the oncoming shoulder for emergency avoidance. Therefore, before overtaking, you must ensure sufficient power reserve; do not "drive a weak car to overtake hard".

Prevent the overtaken vehicle from "maliciously accelerating":

If during overtaking, you find the overtaken vehicle suddenly accelerates to stop you, do not get into a fight. You should immediately release the accelerator, turn on the right turn signal, slow down smoothly and return to the original lane. Safety first.
